The Buck Jasper Mysteries
The first three novels: experiments in plot, form and characterization.
The Buck Jaspers Mystery Series was not planned as a series. It began as a one-off mystery, but after I had written the first one, the characters stayed alive in my mind and kept suggesting other mysteries they could solve. That first book turned into fourteen and counting.
The Sleuth
Unlike in most mystery series, the detective narrator and protagonist William “Buck” Jaspers does not remain the same throughout, but like a normal person, he changes and grows throughout the series, as does his detective agency that he founded with Rubin Marquez at 1223 Bolero Drive in South Miami.
After reviewing the series, I realized that the books could be divided into four divisions.
- The initial book and the two that followed established the series and were my experiments with style and subject matter.
- Beginning with the fourth book, Buck becomes wealthy, the agency expands, and the mysteries force him to face major villains.
- Book nine begins a run of meta-mysteries. The plots are complex and deceptive and the truth is difficult to determine.
- Book Fourteen initiates mysteries with spiritual implications.
